Yes we’re green

In fact the Stonewall Jackson Hotel has been certified by the Virginia Tourism Corporation as Virginia Green.

Virginia Green is a partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The program awards Virginia Green Certification to tourism-related business such as hotels, restaurants and attractions taking voluntary actions to reduce harmful impacts on the environment.

We have achieved this by ensuring that our standard operating procedures are environmentally conscious. That includes everything from providing pitchers of water  instead of bottled water and using real dishware instead of paper disposable products. There are many other ways that we save energy and lower our carbon foot print everyday.

Our proudest green initiative is our new Rooftop Garden. Together, the Stonewall Jackson staff planted a garden of indigenous Virginia flowers, vegetables and herbs in the recycled plastic and metal food containers from the hotel kitchen. We salvage the water run off from the air conditioning system to water the plants. We use the vegetables and herbs we grow in the kitchen.

Here are some of the many ways we continue to be energy efficient and lower our carbon footprint. We encourage everyone to adopt these measures in their own homes when possible

• Offering a choice of plated menus that use less water, instead of buffets

• In-room cards suggest that guests keep their sheets another day to help save water
