Staunton Historic Districts

The Wharf
The Wharf Historic District, listed in the National Register in 1972, grew with the coming of the Virginia Central Railroad in 1854. This commercial district thrived with the building of numerous warehouses around the train depot.

Beverley
Beverley Historic District in downtown Staunton boasts beautiful examples of Victorian era architecture with buildings mainly from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Visit this charming Main Street area to enjoy quaint shops, unique galleries and delicious restaurants.

Newtown

Stuart Addition Historic District was deeded in 1803 and many building in this district are listed in the National Register. This diverse neighborhood is adjacent to Mary Baldwin College and the former Staunton Military Academy.

Gospel Hill
With a blacksmith shop serving as a place for religious gatherings in the 1790s, this area at the corner of Beverley and Coalter Streets earned its name Gospel Hill. This elegant neighborhood boasts stately homes and tree-lined streets.
